As my uncle used to say: There are two theories on arguing with your spouse – neither one works.
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
A REUNION will be happening, soon. As my other uncle used to say: "the speed of time is one second per second". In 2005, July 1 is on a Friday. That will be the official beginning of a week long Marx-Gangel Family Reunion. We intend to have group gatherings at various locations as we find host volunteers. Sam's daughter Georgene and her husband, Jim Nolan extend an invitation for all to gather at their home for the Fourth of July. They live in Kingsville, MO, approximately five miles east of Barb {George Marx & Lib Gangel} and Mike Benson, about an hour's drive from Kansas City. They have lots of room for fireworks, games, lounging, visiting, etc. without restrictions that apply in many cities. There is also a fireworks outlet store just around the corner. For those of you coming from out of town, we will have transportation from the airport, train, bus, or whatever from Sam and Ella's home in Kansas City, KS. This will be a starting point for any and all who arrive in need of transportation and/or a place to stay. In the near future we will have a central gathering point and date determined for a one day grand gathering of the entire Marx-Gangel gang. How long has it been since we have all seen each other? Even for those who attended the 2000 reunion; it's been a long time (5 years). I want to make it clear that the reunion is not just for the children of the George and Lib generation,, but for all Marx-Gangel offspring. Bring your children, their children, etc. to meet the rest of the family. The next grand reunion will probably be in 2010. Some of us will likely not be around for another chance, or as Aunt Pat would say, "No longer vertical". Paul Gangel {Herman & Agnes} – Hope you have your ice cream machine in good working order. Jim, Don and Bill are going to start working out so they will be able to do the cranking. Next month, I'll enclose a mailing list of the entire Mania gang. If you find that someone from the family is not on the list, let them know that they too are invited, and of course, added to the monthly mailing list. Several people have requested the list to use for the holidays. Hope you're making plans to visit next July.
Bill Marx {George & Lib} sent
this August 30. I should have included
it in the September Mania. "Had
a nice visit with Bonnie {Vic's daughter} and her husband Ed near Raymond,
NH. Even though I hadn't seen her
in about 50 years, we had a lot to talk about and exchanged pictures and info
about the family. Luckily, we arrived
at lunchtime for an excellent home cooked meal; Fried chicken, potato salad,
corn on the cob, deviled eggs, apple pie and ice cream. Great Yankee hospitality."
Hank & Betty {Bob & Lou Marx Bender} Hagedorn announce the marriage of their granddaughter Beth, daughter of Doris and Mike Schroeger. Beth was married to Lee Masters, from Merriam, KS at St. Joseph Church in Shawnee. The couple will live in Wichita, which is also where Hank and Betty's son Larry now lives. Betty, incidentally, is the first in a long line of grandchildren born to our grandparents, George and Grace (Hoedl) Marx.
Good
judgment comes from bad experience; which often comes from bad judgment.
Ed and Pat Gangel – e-mail
September 20: " We were able to download the Mania….no problem. We think of you and your miraculous
recovery. The last we heard, Ella was
still experiencing some pain from shingles.
I hope that is now behind…the experience, not the shingles. We are anxious to get the house sold and
make the move to So. California. This place is too big for us to take care
of…no energy left for fun. Most of our
friends here are no longer vertical, so our social life has pretty well shut
down. We both look forward to the
Marx/Gangel Reunion.
Love, Aunt Pat and Uncle
Ed."
Steve Marx {Sam – George – Lib} made a brief visit to Sam and Ella's on Sept. 24. He was in K.C. for one day only. We'll see him and his wife Gail at the reunion.
Ed and Bonnie {Vic Gangel}
Schuster are moving from New Hampshire to Missouri. "Hi Sam, Here it is, almost the middle of the month, so I thought I would
jot a few lines. It's an Indian summer
day here, in the 70's. We are busy
packing. We will be moving to
Camdenton, MO on the 25th. Hopefully we
will be unpacked and settled before the snow flies. Other than That, we're not doing much of anything. I got recipes from Mary Ann for the cookbook
plus some of my own. Tell Cheryl I say
hi. I will be off line till the middle
of November, but will write as soon as I get hooked up again. Take care of yourselves and we'll call after
we're totally settled in.
Love, Bonnie."
Mary Ann {Bill-George-Lib} tells me she has a problem, or rather, I have the problem. "For some reason, the last two Manias I received, the calendar was askew (dates and names not aligned). Also, it opens up with some type of margin box on the left of my screen. Any suggestions about why this is happening? It was great hearing from all the travelers. I guess we better put our two cents worth since our visit to Boston." ***Editors note: The only thing I know about computers is how to create problems, not solve them. However, as is done with all such comments; yours will be taken under advisement.
"We really had a great
visit during our three weeks in visiting son Bob, his wife Sue and children
Maddie and Brett. We baby sat the
kids while Sue was at work and Bob was teaching (he teaches 9th grade Physical
Science this year at Andover High School).
Brett loves to tickle and roughhouse and Maddie loves making up and
acting in plays with her friends and doing crafts. It was so sad to leave and we wonder why they have to live so far
away. But there's always our next visit
to look forward to.
While there, we went to visit a place calles America's
Stonehenge in New Hampshire which had miles of rock formations arranged
according to astrological charts. It
was quite interesting. The formations
had been there for centuries. Back at
the house we had family badminton games, bike rides and picnics. One Saturday, Bill and I went to tour
Martha's Vineyard. We took a ferry
across Woods Hole to get there. It was
just beautiful and the weather was perfect.
Another event; Bob, Sue and the kids took us to Glouchester
Fishermen's Festival which had tons of craft and food booths. It was right on the water and it was a warm,
sunny day. Just perfect! The kids, Bill and Bob played by throwing
and skipping rocks in the water while Sue and I shopped. The movie, "The Perfect Storm" was
supposed to be about the fishermen on Glouchester. You wouldn't know there could be such a ferocious storm seeing
how calm and blue the water was that day. As you probably heard, we also drove to New Hampshire to visit
Bill's cousin Bonnie Gangel and her husband Ed. We had a great visit with them and talked about a lot of the Gangel/Marx
history and genealogy. She served us a
delicious fried chicken dinner, typical of the Midwest, and we were full for
two days after that meal. Thanks
Bonnie. Talk to you later, Mer"
Cheryl Henley {Sam-George-Lib}
on 10/8/04 writes: "My
future husband, Tom McCleary and I just returned to reality after a week of
pure heaven on the ship Princess Diamond, visiting the Mexican Riviera. We left Los Angeles on Sept. 25 and returned
Oct. 2. It was the most wonderful and
beautiful trip I've ever had. This
being the first time I have ever flown, I was a little nervous, but after Tom
had a few laughs over my jittery nerves, he calmed me down and made the trip
very special. We went to Puerto
Vallarta where we spent a day on the beach.
Then we were off to Mazatlan where we took a van tour of the sights and
did some shopping. From there we went
to Cabo San Lucas where we took a catamaran and went snorkeling. I would recommend this cruise to everyone,
it's a fantastic way to travel, the food is non-stop, and the scenery the
prettiest I've ever seen. We're already
planning another, possibly to Alaska.
But first, we plan to honeymoon at Niagra Falls in the fall. Just before leaving on the cruise we had a
hectic weekend entered in a barbeque contest with my son Brian Henley and
his wife Jessica. We cooked on a
unique smoker that Tom constructed out of an old refrigerator. Our chicken rated third in the contest. You can all judge our smoking ability next
year at the family reunion. We are in
the process of possibly acquiring a large trailer type smoker for starting a
business catering various events."
I
used to eat natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural
causes!
Before you
criticize someone, you
should walk a
mile in their
shoes.
That
way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and have their shoes.
The Serendipity Seven – The
seven Marxes of George Marx and Elizabeth (Lib) Gangel and their spouses
(or should that be spise) who started this "thing" have been busy,
already making plans for the reunion.
(Serendipity was Ella's idea of a description, and I guess I agree with
it. I had to look it up in the
dictionary --- you will too.) Bill's
wife, Mary Ann (Mer) was responsible for the t-shirts we wore at the last
reunion, with "MARXMANIAX" on the back and numbers indicating the
order of birth on the front. For 2005,
we decided that since she did such a great job, we would just dump it on her
again. She asked for, and has been
getting some very interesting ideas, most of which cannot be included in this
family oriented newsletter. However,
the following e-mail has recently allowed time for the seven of us to come up
with more ridiculous ideas. She
writes: "For the time being
this project will have to be put on hold, until Bill and I return from Hawaii
where we will attend my niece's wedding.
We leave Tues. Oct. 5 and return the 15th. Later, Mer"
Don {George & Lib} and
wife Barb have returned to Anchorage.
Don returns to work at the University of Alaska as Professor Dr. Donald
L. Marx, instructor of some long named subject which in short means Business
Statistics. He and Barb spent the
summer in Warsaw, MO where they had a beautiful home built. Their back yard gently slopes down to their
dock which floats on the Lake of the Ozarks.
They plan to retire there when Don finishes his teaching career, which
at this university numbers more than twenty years. The following transcript should be self explanatory. "It looks like I am going to have to
teach the Spring Semester, 2005. So, we
most likely will not be back Feb. 1 as I anticipated. However, we should be able to come down in mid-March when Spring
Break occurs. After that I will have to
return to Anchorage for a few weeks to finish the semester, but Barb will stay
in Warsaw."
Some news of my family here in Anchorage. Our daughter Michelle and Mike Kubik were
married on September 18. They just
returned last week from a Las Vegas – Los Angeles honeymoon. He's an L.A. Dodgers fan. He also likes the Dallas Cowboys, but
otherwise he seems like a pretty nice guy.
Jason (granddaughter Mariah's husband) had emergency appendectomy surgery last night. His appendix is gone, but he is doing well. He is in Providence Hospital here in Anchorage."
The
high cost of living doesn't seem to have affected its popularity.
Sister Mary Grace was sitting at the window of her convent, meditating. After some time
She noticed that she had received a letter from home. Her parents as they occasionally did,
Had enclosed a crisp new $100 bill. She smiled at the gesture, then read the ;letter.
As she finished the letter, she noticed a shabbily dressed stranger leaning against the
Lamppost below. She felt sorry for the poor man and quickly wrote, "Don't despair, Sister
Mary Grace," on a piece of paper and wrapped the hundred dollar bill in it. She got the
Man's attention and tossed it out the window to him. The stranger picked it up, and
With a look of puzzled surprise, tipped his weathered, dingy, worn cap and hurried
Off down the street.
The next day, Sister Mary Grace was told that there was a man at the convent door
Who insisted on seeing her. She went down to the visitors foyer and was surprised
To find the same stranger waiting. Without a word he handed her a huge wad of $100
Bills. "What's this?" she asked. As he headed out the door, he turned and replied,
"That's your $8000 Sister, Don't Despair paid 80 to 1.
