This are my views concerning the sometimes furious battle that have arised in the OS/2 community over the future of the OS.
I see two paths, the first one is the MCP, aka the IBMīs "Official" Distribution of fixpacks and system enhancements, there are some advantages, namely:
- IBM gets the whole money you pay for it.
- You have a box with the IBM brand on it.
- You have an up-to-date system.
But it does have some disadvantages, for example:
- As a SOHO user, IBM will continue to ignore you.
- You canīt say anything about the future of the OS.
The second path is eCS, this are the advantages i see:
- You have an up-to-date system.
- You have support from the same company that sold you the software.
- Your opinion about the future of the OS is taken into account.
- There is a bunch of applications that come free with eCS.
- The SOHO eCS users will have a voice that speaks for us with IBM.
and of course there are also some disadvantages:
- I will be using eComStation, and even being only the name, i will miss OS/2.
For a long time, i prayed for some organization -just ANY organization- who would come and gather all the SOHO OS/2 users and could finally make IBM realize we existed. Serenity Systems is making it, and i thank them for making it so, so they have my full support.
IBM has taken OS/2 as far as it could -and sometimes i think that was just not far enough-, at least in the SOHO market, so, for god's sake, let SS do their move and try to market the best OS available against the MS smoke and mirrors, and against the Linux hipe. If they achieve something, they will have done more for OS/2 than anyone else in the last 5 years, so i don`t think it`s fair that they have to fight against some OS/2 users too.
I think eCS adds to the OS/2 inertia, we all benefit from it, the current OS/2 users benefit from the development of drivers and the interest that eCS might rise in the software developers, the eCS users have someone who answers our questions and mediates between us and IBM, the market receives another *better* alternative to the MS or UX stuff, so we all win, let's stop this discussion and move on, we are all OS/2 users, in the end, eCS is just the same OS/2 with the same MCP with an additional app on top.
