1999 was the most devastating year of the decade. North Carolina was hit by 3 different hurricanes, making four strikes total. Hurricane Dennis was the first to strike. The eye, nearly missed the coastline, however, drenching rains hit the North Carolina coast. Dennis moved off the coast and after gaining power, turned back into North Carolina, striking it directly. Next, Hurricane Floyd hit the coastline. This hurricane did not do much damage due to wind, but rain. This hurricane was huge in size, being compared to Texas in Diameter. The large ammounts of rain caused over 3 Billion dollars worth of flood damage to North Carolina. Finally, after we thought the devastation was finished, Irene came, packing large ammounts of rain, reflooding roads and houses. 1999 was a terrible year for landowners, but the surfers enjoyed the best, most consistent surf in over 10 years. |
