SOME
WORDS: Only 370 m from
Peloponnesian Peninsula explain its popularity,
with some good beaches, fair taverna, and
considerable nightlife. the island is irregularly
sharped, with a convulated coastline with many
coves and beaches, and nearly divided into two
islands joined by a narrow isthmus. The smaller
part, Sferia, contains the port and major city of
poros and the biggest concentration of the
tourist facilities. Kalavria, the much larger
half, is densely wooded with many natural
harbours, beaches and secluded villas.
WHAT TO
SEE & DO:
Poros
town has a Naval Training
School and a small Archaeology
Museum with finds from
ancient Troezen. The island's most famous sight
is the Temple of Poseidon, now little
more than a few broken columns and some rubble on
a hill near the center of Kalavria. most of the
marbles was hauled away to build a monastery on
Hydra. In 332 B.C. after the defeat of the greek
forces by the Macedonians at Lamia, Demosthenes
fled to the Temple of poseidon for refuge (for
political exiles) but Antipater's forces pursued
him, and he committed suicide by swallowing
poison hidden in the nib of his pen.
Those with a special
interes in monasteries might want visit the 18th
century Monastery of Zoodoches
Piyi ("Live-giving
Spring"), about 4km southeast of Askeli.
There is a beach
northwest of town at Neorio, thought it is not
always very clean. Better beaches are found
southeast of town at Askeli
and Kanali.
Instead of touring Poros, you might want to catch
the ferry across to Galatas,
especially in the middle of June during the
annual Flower Festival,
when there are parades with floats and marching
bands and floral displays. From Galatas you can
catch a bus the 8km west to Trizina
(ancient Troezen) birthplace of Theseus and scene
of the tragedy of his wife Phaedra and son
Hippolytus, and the site of an ancient
temple of Ascelpios.
