THE ANCIENT MAYAN CULTURE The Mayas were a civilization that established many communities in Guatemala. When you come to Guatemala you will find several arqueological sites that show how advanced they were in construction techniques, arts, astronomy, etc. The most amazing site is Tikal in the Northern territory (See the picture). Placed among the tropical jungle, there are hundreds of exotic animals and plants to see. You will never forget the huge and admirable ruins that struggle to stand out the forest. Almost every guatemalan citizen has mayan ancestors. The mayas' direct descendants are about the 60 % of the present population and live in similar conditions than their ancient predecessors. One remarkable practice among them is the Mayan Religion. Their believes and rites are plenty of mistery and profound meaning. Guatemala has just finished a civil war that lasted almost thirty years. Mayas' descendants suffered the worst part in that war. In the present days, after the war, the mayan priests have begun again to conduct public ceremonies and mayas' descendants are looking again for their own identity. |
