REACTION: MALVER HAYNES
By: Elissa Kahahane
Malver Haynes was our guest speaker and she came from Seattle, Washington. She talked a little about herself and how she started as a teacher, than the director of finance, and finally a regional educational consultant. I enjoyed how she talked about the importance of the three programs that involve business and travel. She said a lot of things about how AOTT programs are in the mainland. She showed how we should first explore Maui since we live here, and when we know all the places, than we can explore other places. That’s why FAM trips to the mainland isn’t expected because out AOTT doesn’t know all about Hawaii yet. One thing that I learned from her was that there is many professions that are later involved in the travel industry without ever having to join travel. Those can be jobs like: doctors, artists, etc. Somehow, some professions like these are important to travel even if travel is not your particular area for a career. I also learned how important finance and travel programs want future business people by giving out scholarships. She said that they could give out from a thousand dollars to ten thousand dollars. That really interested me because I really want to try and get a scholarship so I could have money to go to a university in the mainland. It was really interesting when she asked our class who knows what career they want to be in and if travel is what they’re looking at because a lot of us still don’t know what we want and all of our futures are undecided. She made me realize that our time is running out to guess what we want to be for the rest of our lives. She was a great guest speaker and never wasted any time with us that showed that travel students are very important.
“I thought
it was fun listening to her because she seemed to be a bright, interesting
lady. I liked how she asked us
questions instead of her just lecturing us to sleep.” Candace Cross
