Water Safety Reaction

The first day of water safety was a very good experience.  Even though I came late due to the accident in Honokowai, I still had the chance to participate.  Some of the activities that were included in the lesson were head bobbing under the water, we practiced doing strokes with both left and right arms using the small boogie board. We had to use the red lifeguard floater to rescue the person in danger, and lastly, we had to throw the white donut floater into the water to rescue the dangered victim.  However, that was not it.  We had to swim around the deep end of the pool for 45 minutes without touching the sides of the pool.  Overall, It was a very meaningful experience and I can’t wait till next time.

One part of the lesson that I really liked was the part when we had to partner up and rescue each other with a red lifeguard floater.  It seemed very fun for me because a lot of strength and hard work was actually needed to swim to the victim.  Pulling them back to shore was also very hard to do.  However, I feel that in order to be certified in water safety, we have to know how to rescue a person in danger!

Another part of the lesson that I really enjoyed was the head bobbing.  It was really good that the instructor made us do head bobs after each activity.  It gave us time to relax our body and breath for a moment. It made me practice how to take breaths under the water.  Overall, I thought it was a very fun part of the lesson.

Lastly, the hardest part of the lesson was the 45-minute swim!  I felt that it was very hard for me because, I have a very difficult time breathing and swimming at the same time.  I cannot hold my breath under the water for a long period of time.  That is basically why I had to float most of the time.  Overall, the 45-minute swim was not a very wasteful activity.  I feel that it was important to practice swimming for a long period of time in order to survive if we were stranded in the ocean somewhere.
