Things That Will Be Finishing Up Soon .... by Adam (2005) _________________________________________________________________
Things That
Will Be Finishing Up Soon: my access to harems of 20-year-olds that actually
find me attractive, my pollution-induced phlegm crises, my regular purchases
of shelves full of fashionable $10 shirts, the possibility of me
single-handedly bringing down a dictatorship. Yep, that’s right… I’m
finished in After
months of painful navel-gazing about whether I should take the graceful exit
or to go for my boss’ position…I have made a decision. Actually it was
made for me last week. All that deep introspection and prophesizing came to an
abrupt end when I finally asked my boss about my prospects and she glibly spat
out: “oh… you won’t get my job. They already know who they’re giving
it to.’ (even before the official job announcement) I greeted
the news with relief rather than disappointment. Her job would be a great
challenge, but not necessarily the bits of development work that I love. It
would be mostly kissing funder ass, sipping wine with regional management
divas and swapping thousands of dollars among budget lines. Although, I was
thinking it would be fun to shape the org in my image (no, I don’t mean
making it more handsome, intelligent and witty ;-) …. just more community-focussed,
fair and democratic.) It’s been
almost 7 years since I left People who
have spent any amount of time with me probably think “Planning” is
something I should teach, rather than study. I’ve always been an
over-planner. For example I have imposed upon myself a 4 stage application
procedure before I allow myself a bowel movement. (At this point, I have not
found anyone willing to take part in my approval system. Thus, I submit the
paperwork directly to myself. I actually declined one of my recent midday crap
requests, thinking it was really gratuitous bowel opulence. I mean, who craps
in the afternoon?) But this type of planning incorporates lots of things I enjoy and care about… international development, community economic development, mediation and facilitation, working on social problems like drugs or homelessness …. even disaster planning (which I thought sounded VERY cool, until I figured out it’s actually planning FOR a disaster. So much for my “tsunami wipes out Cirque de Soleil” scheme Anyway, I
have 4 months to get in as many shirts, boys, dvd’s, human rights
advancements and mango shakes as possible. Jeez, I will miss Thailand
