Arrival Johannesburg International Airport. After a warm South African welcome, we will leave Johannesburg for a leisurely trip to Bloemfontein. Dinner included and the rest of the evening at leisure.
To orientate you with regards to the Anglo-boer War, visit the Anglo-Boer War museum and Women’s Memorial. Guided tour through the complex led by expert Museum staff. City tour of Bloemfontein. Lunch own account. Visit Onze Rust, the farm of Pres. MT Steyn, the last president of the Orange Free State Republic. The original farmhouse is still as in the time of the president and it now houses some magnificent Anglo-Boer War memorabilia. At the farm you can join in re-enacting such famous battles as Magersfontein and get the opportunity to shoot with an original Boer War Mauser or Lee-Metford. Typical South African dinner at the farm restaurant.
After breakfast we will leave for Kimberley and the western front. Follow in the footsteps of Methuen on the Western front from Belmont up to Magersfontein. We first visit historical Kimberley with its Big Hole, the biggest man made hole in the world. Kimberley is known for its diamonds and you will also get the chance to buy a diamond! After lunch we will leave for Magersfontein (11 December 1899). The afternoon will be spent on the battlefield, visiting the Black Watch graves, Scandinavian graves as well as Boer trench positions. The Battlefield of Modder river will also be visited. Dinner Kimberley.
Today we visit Graspan/Enslin and Belmont as well as Orange River Concentration Camp. The British Block-house and old railway bridge will be visited. On our way back to Bloemfontein we will visit a wine making cellar where wine with Anglo-Boer War labels can be bought. Dinner Bloemfontein.
After a busy week we will have a leisurely breakfast before we depart for the Eastern Free State with its magnificent sandstone cliffs and scenery. Lunch own account. Overnight at Fouriesburg which is famous for its cherries and asparagus.
Depart for Kwa-Zulu Natal via Eastern Free State. On our way we will be paying a visit to Surrender Hill in the Brandwater Basin where 4 000 Boers surrendered on 30 July 1900. The picturesque town of Clarens, will also be visited. This area is known as the Brandwater Basin and it is here where general Prinsloo was forced to surrender by general A Hunter. A specialist local guide will enlighten us with the facts and figures of this often neglected part of Anglo-Boer War history. Overnight Golden Gate Reserve.
Depart from Royal National Park. En route we will pay a visit to the Basutu Cultural village, to see how the Basotho people live. The magnificent Drakensberg Mountains is the biggest mountain range in South Africa and well worth the visit. Enjoy a well-deserved break and participate in the many hikes up the mountain or spend the day at leisure enjoying the sunshine.
Depart via Bergville to Spioenkop battlefield. It was on this battlefield that the British forces had the second most losses on one day during the war. From thee we travel south to visit Chievely (where Winston Churchill was captured). Chievely military cemetery and Colenso battlefield. Overnight Ladysmith.
The battlefields of the siege of Ladysmith will be visited. Ceasar’s Camp and Wagon Hill (Platrand). Intombi camp and Observation Hill (Deneys Reitz’s Commando describes the action as "Red Fort"). Overnight Ladysmith.
Depart for Ulundi battlefield, Ondini Cultural Museum (including Kind Cetshwayo’s partially restored residence). Mgungundlovu and kwaMatiwane (Piet Retief’s grave).
Today we visit the Anglo-Zulu battlefields, Isandlwana, Rorkes Drift Battlefield and museum, Fugitives Drift. Arrive Dundee.
Depart to Johannesburg for flight home.
