outside Buckingham Palace shortly after the Changing of the Guard. |
London, England--We had a "jolly" good time in the Queen's own hometown of London. The city is filled with lots to do until 6:00 p.m. when everything shuts down. When this happened, we just headed off to Theatreland to check out a new play or musical that hadn't come to the U.S., yet. We managed to fit in Notre Dame de Paris, Personals, The Lion King, and The Abridged Collections of Shakespeare. The most unusual play we saw was Romeo and Juliette performed in Portugese by a Brazilian street company in the newly built Dome Theatre. They used a 1970 Volvo for the balcony scene and were sometimes on stilts! Recommendations: You have to go to a couple plays while in London. The cheapest seats are usually available until curtain, and you should never take 'no' for an answer. Catherine and I haggled two standing seats out for The Lion King, so it can be done. (If you sit in a seat, do you stand in a steand?) Although it's really not much, everyone has to view the Changing of the Guard outside Buckingham Palace. July 20-25, 2000 |
