To Catch The Chimera

On the breast of the night rests a pale young moon
A verdant garden, through pleasant glades I roam
Moss cascades softly from outstretched branches
Beside an ebony pool you sit in tranquility
To your side I walk yet always you remain opposite
I run to you yet gain no ground
To swim across I dive

Pummeled immediately by crashing waves
As a beacon of hope, a ship I see distantly
Toward it I surge
With a multitude of squirming fish and sea creatures
A net surrounds me and lifts me aboard
On the deck beside me a mermaid gasps
Panic fills her eyes as gills quiver uselessly
Recognition comes like the dawning sun

To hold and comfort you my desire
Toward you I struggle against my bonds
A lurch of the deck and you roll free
With a sad glance and the thrust of your tail
Over the railing you splash to the sea below
Frenzied I struggle to free myself
Finally succeeding
Without a backward glance I fling myself over the side

I am falling
Earth below me a vision from space
Matter of moments until I smash to the ground
I pray for blackness prior to impact
Entering the clouds I see radiant angels recline
A beautiful vision turns toward me
You smile, extending your hand to me
Reaching for you, I drop into searing sunlight

Malevolent rays scorch me as I crawl across infinite sands
Everywhere baked desert, no cacti, no life
Not even a vulture to wheel above then descend to pick my bones
Parched and weak, unable to continue
Head drops to the sand, last breath is drawn
Thru cracked lids I see your approaching feet
I try to raise my hand to you
You walk on across the water . . .

Well, there it is. My little poem. No awards being won around here, as you can tell. If you want to read a really good poem (which is, of course, a purely subjective viewpoint) check this out.

If you've exhausted your patience with compositional flatulence masquerading as poetic artistry (that's in reference to my tripe, and not at all directed toward Mr. Carroll's excellent work, which happens to be my all-time favorite poem, so sod off!), go back where you were or
