Llamaphilia
Nate has an unbridled passion for herding Eastern Bolivian llamas. He is a lifelong member of the Easter Bolivian Llama Herder's Association, a fraternal society dedicated to the proliferation of llama ranches and the education of non-llama herders worldwide. I still maintain that Peruvian llamas are a hardier breed, but since the local zoning laws where Nate lives don't permit llama herding he has been unable to prove once and for all which breed is superior. If you want to learn more about Nate's obsession, why not visit some of his favorite "Llama Links" and see what the debate is all about.
Llama Links
  • Llama Mall is a purveyor of llama supplies, services and breeding. Also provides listings for shows and events like trekking.
  • Llama Market has llamas for sale and provides health resources.
  • Llama Tack is a source of traditional llama and alpaca tack. (Although Nate only grudgingly acknowledges the alpaca as a versatile wool-producing pack animal, many others don't hold themselves to such strictly llamaphilic standards--see Nate's statement below for an example of one exception.)
  • Llama Web is an award winning, major resource site for llama information. It includes ads for llama farms, veterinary resource information, llama trekking, T-shirts, and B&B's. Don't ask me what a B&B is, go find out for yourself!
  • Quality Llama Products is a site that caters to alternative livestock needs, including such wannabes as goats, ostriches, emus and donkeys.
  • Wonderful World of Llamas shares the pleasure that llamas can bring to our lives, not as livestock but as pets. This is Nate's second favorite site because he, like the site's authors, has a llama-shaped void in his heart that cannot be completely filled by any other living creature.
  • Naked Dancing Llama really gets Nate's llama-loving heart a-pounding. NDL is an advice-giving, frolicking, tangoing, peanut spitting llama who is here to help us all with our problems. The Naked Dancing Llama should not be confused with the Dalai Lama, who also gives advice but frolics much less frequently (although he has been known to spit peanuts).
  • Holy Order of the Llama provides some insight into what stokes the fire of llamaphilia within Nate's breast.
In the interest of fairness, I post this rebuttal from Nate:
"I feel that I should amend some of your statements concerning the Eastern Bolivian Llama Herders Society. It is not, in fact, a religion or philia in any shape or form. It is simply a fraternal organization of those of us who have chosen the fun and profit of herding llamas. We also have formed no concrete opinions of the alpaca; however, the (ASS) American Society of Shepherds has. Their opinions have been published in June 1998 issues of ASS Weekly. This can be found in any of the finer libraries around the world. Again, llama herding is more than just a job, it is a way of life."
