Lisbon to Fatima

We got up early and back on the road again. Everyone on the tour had chosen the optional trip to Fatima except for one person who was sick and another who was sick of the bus. Our first stop was Obidos where we went inside the old castle walls. Jose took us inside the castle walls and talks about the castle. The castle was built in the 10th century by the Moors and then conquered by the Portugese in the 12th century. The Portugese government has turned the castle into a Hotel (called a pousada) that has only 6 rooms.

We then left for Nazare, a fishing village. The bus parked on the road next to the beach in Nazare. Jane and Fred separated, Jane to look at shops and Fred to walk around the city. The city was very nice with narrow streets paved with the typical small blocks used for streets and sidewalks. Jane brought home one of the small paving blocks she found laying next to a sidewalk.

The bus took us to the top of the hill in Nazare and we stopped to take pictures of Nazare and its beach. Leaving at 12:30, we then traveled inland to Fatima. We passed many groves of eucalyptus and pine trees. Bamboo was also growing everywhere.
