Byblos

This site is dedicated to Byblos. The ancient city of Phoenicia claims to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with remains of civilizations dating from about 5000 BC. The city was an important seaport during the 2nd millenium BC, when it exported cedar and other woods to Egypt. Byblos is believed by many to be the place where an alphabetic phonetic script was developed which grew in the modern alphabets we know today. Byblos got its name from the ancient Greek name for papyrus-bublos-because papyrus was delivered to the Greeks from Egypt via the port of Byblos, (which also gave its name to the bible).
