Founded in the 3rd Millenium BC, Sidon is another of the oldest Phoenician cities. Due to its early prominence in trade (especially of Phoenician glassware and the special purple dyes,"ourjouan"), was a hard won prize but nevertheless frequently conquered, detroyed and rebuilt. prosperous throughout the 2nd Millenium BC, it was ruled by Assyria, Persia, Alexander the Great, the Seleucids of Syria, the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt, and the Romans. Even Herod the great and Jesus are known to have visited it. |
