Today (7/29/00) is the annual burro race in Fairplay, I believe. I came to Fairplay in '51 and ended up washing dishes in the Hand Hotel and playing keyboard in a remote bar called The Orphan Boy Lodge (up mosquito gulch near Alma). It was run by a color ul man by the name of Walter Judd "The Deacon". The bar was allegedly a former cat house that served the horny local miners. I worked in an open pit placer mine on Pennsylvania mountain. Got acquainted with lots of local characters...most who've gone t their reward. Harry Ault, an old prospector was one of the most colorful. I believe a guy by the name of Painter won the race that year ('51). It was hosted by a Denver radio personality by the name of Star Yellan. I've lots more, but there just may e a limit to what the comments box will hold.

It is interesting to see how many people found the site by looking for info on the "South Park" show. I myself have never seen it, but have lived South Park all my life. My mother was born on my grandfather's homestead near Hartsel in 1932, and bless he heart, she is still alive and kickin' today. My father, also born in 1932 and still around, worked at the Salt Works Ranch as a young man, and after he and my mother were married, they ran the store and station at Antero Junction in the 50's. My older rother went to school in the old Hartsel one room school house. When I came along, the family had moved to Buena Vista, but my granddad and I would go to the old Mercantile store on the weekends. As a child, I also remember going to the Hartsel Hotel on weekends for the live music.

I was born in Fairplay in 1934. My grand mother Zoe Newett/Nethery, and all of my relation on her side of the family are in the local cemetary. She was the first white baby borne in Hartzle. Nice web page, I enjoyed it. LeRoy
