This web page exists to document the travels of the vessel Kaukoe, and her owners Tom and Tracy, on their voyage down the west coast of Mexico.
The name Kaukoe is a Hawaiìan word meaning "to persevere along a straight course". It was used to describe spears used by King Kamehameha's warriors in ancient times.
Kaukoe is a 30-foot sloop, manufactured by Ericson in 1984. Like most cruisers in San Diego, we found Downwind Marine to be a valuable asset in our preparation, and service when we were down south. The mainsail was made in 1996 by North Sails. Then Tracy discovered Sailrite kits, and started making sails herself. The first one she sewed, a spinnaker, was 575 square feet. By way of comparison, our house is about 1000 square feet! She has since sewn a storm jib, a 100% jib, and made slight modifications to our 130% genoa before the trip.
Vessel and crew are back in San Diego! As schedules permit, we will post pictures and stories from the trip. Thanks to all those who helped us make this incredible trip -- especially our wonderful webmaster, a marvelous manager of QSLs, and an extraordiary e-mailer of daily updates!
