Costa Rica is a Central American republic located north of Panama
and possessing two seacoasts on the PacificOcean in the west and on the
Caribbean Sea in the east. The country has an area of 50,700 sq km (19,575
sq mi), slightly more than Switzerland, and a population of 3,160,405 (1992
est.). The capital and largest city, SAN JOSE, is
located in the central mountain valley. Costa Rica is notable among Latin
American countries for its long-standing democratic form of government.
