Volcán Poás(2704 metres), which lies about 37 km north of Alajuela, has been active since well before records started in 1828. There have been three major periods of recorded activity, from 1888 to 1895, 1903 to 1912 and 1952 to 1954. At present time the crater is a bubbling and steaming cauldron but doesn´t pose an imminent threat.
