Thursday, July 21

We left the "Camping Europa" at 9AM, we had an hour to get on board the train bound for southern Italy. It would be nice to get on a ferry for Greece that day. Brindisi is the major harbour for passenger traffic to Greece and in the summer the quay-area is crowded with InterRail'ers.

Near Bari, Trains passing in the dusk

It was night when we reached Bari. We had to change to a small train to go to Brindisi and we had a couple of hours at the station. In a small restaurant just outside the station we ordered some pizza. They were really awful, we weren't sure if it were anchovy or rotten Tomatoes on the pizza. Our first Tourist-Trap.

Back on the Bari-trainstation we sat and waited. Soon a group of Sweedes arrived with a load of beer. As soon as they discovered we were Danes the yelled "TUBORG", apparently their favorite product from Denmark. When the train arrived we joined them in their compartment, they were generous with the beer.

On the half-way to Brindisi someone in the train must have pulled the emergency brakes. All our luggage came down from the shelves above but this was of no concer to our Sweedish friends. The main concern was that the beer was intact. We had a good laugh about that.

When we finally reached Brindisi it was 10PM and the next ferry was scheduled for the next morning. We were lucky enough to be allowed to sleep on the quay-area.

Morning at Brindisi, Italian harbour

Friday, July 22

Our Swedish drinking friends
Early morning and the quay was packed with travelers. When we arrived in the night we (us three and the Swedes) were the only ones. Our drinking companions took the first ferry out of Brindisi while we booked tickets for the cheapest, scheduled to sail around noon.

The Swedes had bought some food and beverage for their trip. A water melon and two boxes of beer, healthy and nutritious food for a long journey in the Adriatic sea. I hope they didn't starve too much. Otherwise it is possible to buy stuff on the ferry at exorbitant prices.

We spent the day dozing on the quay and buying food for the trip. On board we met some other danes and decided to sleep on the deck out back. On board we bought a bottle of Ouzo, quite cheap and played some cards the five of us.

The night was closing in and that Ouzo taste good. I think we bought an other bottle, that part is a bit fuzzy, actually the series of events until 10PM is a blur to me. I remember Kenneth stating that he wanted some fresh air and went to the rail. We were sitting on the deck in such a way that he could not get past the four of us without us noticing.

The Ouzo-drinking-party on the way to Corfu

Suddenly I turned around to check on Kenneth, but he was gone. My first thought was that he had been leaning over the rail and fallen. Panic, All I said was "Where is Kenneth?" and the others sheared my panic. We scoured the ship from bow to stern, noticed some stairs down to the car deck, empty. Nick was on his way up to the Captain, but how do you explain such a situation? When you don't speak Greek?

Finally we found him on the bathroom at the bottom of the ferry, talking into the Big White Telephone (throwing up). Somewhat reassured we went to sleep until the ferry was at Corfu harbour.

Saturday, July 23

It was wery early (5AM) when the ferry was at Corfu and we were getting off. We all had a hangover but Kenneth was hit the hardest.

Early morning. Arrived at Corfu harbour

We had located a Camp on the northern part of the island so we had to find a bus going there. But first some breakfast for those who could eat. A small restaurant was already open and they had some delicious rice-with-fish-and-something. Then we got hold of the unhungry travellers and went for the busses.

Around 10AM we reached the Camp, erected our tent (not to sleep in but for our luggage). Some of us left for the beach, some took a nap in the shade.
