Europe - Sevilla, Spain |

Tuesday, July 10
We all left Lisbon together. Mette and Søs was going to Mirabella where some of their friends had a bungalow for the summer. We had plans of going to Morocco but agreed to meet the girls again at Ronda, Spain.
Going for Almada | Eating snacks | Dancing in the streets |
The train down to Algarve and further on to southern Spain leave from a station on the other side of the Tagus river, at a small village (Almada). It was not to leave until midnight so we found an empty beach and stayed there the afternoon. In the evening we searched for a place to eat and found a small restaurant on the otherwise empty town square.
While we decided on what to order the owner of the place came with a bowl of the local snack. Tiny-tiny boiled snails which you eat with a pin. They taste Okay, an interesting experience.
While we were eating an orchestra started practicing in the nearby town-hall. The windows were open and they played lovely, but with an unusual repertoire. The part I remember the best is their version of Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You by Frankie Valli. I think I were a bit drunk and the tune reminded me of 'The deer Hunter', the part where the friends are assembled for the last time in their favorite bar before the wedding and going to war. A sentimental moment, it must have been the beer singing.
After night-fall the town was suddenly packed with people at all ages and dancing all over the place. I guess we bumped into some kind of festival. We participated until we had to leave for the station.

Mette and Søs on the way to Sevilla |
The night train was at the Spanish border early in the morning and we walked to the ferry to take us across the river. The last part into Sevilla was by Bus and Train and we arrived there in the early afternoon.
That evening we went out to see the sights. It was still light but the sun was below the nearby mountains. The heat was immense but that is okay since the air was dry. So dry that Dimo's contact lenses was drying out and suddenly they literally pop'ed right out of his eyes. We had to go back for him to change into glasses and then we got lost in the old city. We tried to calculate where we were but the streets ar not straight, they curve and we could no see any landmarks to navigate by.
The Hotel-patio in Sevilla where we stayed |
Tired and hungry we entered a local restaurant, I don't think they saw many tourists there. They had only menus in Spanish and we tried to translate the best we could. Sheep-brain or bull-testicles was something we would avoid at all cost. Pescado is Fish and Frito is fried, sounds like fish'n'chips, so we settled for "Pescado Vario Fritos". Kenneth didn't have courage to order something he didn't understand.
A Castle in Sevilla |
We had ordered Varied Fried Fish, They tasted of nothing and was supposed to be eaten hole, with the bone and everything. I could only eat the small Anchovies like that. The good thing about this meal was the price, It didn't completely drain us from our our Pesetas.
A tower of the Castle |
Back on the street again we walked for a while and suddenly we were out of the old town, back on the ring-road. But where was our hotel? Which direction was was the fastest? We gave up and took a Cab, realizing that we were actually quite close to the place. That night we slept like rocks.
Thursday, July 12
The next day we left Sevilla to find the girls again. It was morning and not so warm as the day before. We found a grocer that made some great sandwiches. We used a small fortune to have enough for Lunch and Dinner but we couldn't know that we should have to wait longer than that.
Sleeping outside the Train Station |
I guess we were about 50 InterRail'ers and a couple of stray dogs. No problems here.
