GUADALAJARA! (4)
The Hospicio Cabaņas was built in 1801 as an orphanage. It was designed in neoclassical style by Manuel Tolsa, the leading Mexican architect of the period. In 1811 during Mexico's war for independence from Spain, Miguel Hidalgo here signed a proclamation abolishing slavery.
The building served as an orphanage until well into the 20th century. It is now the Instituto Cultural de Cabaņas, a cultural center which is a museum and school for the arts.

The Hospicio Cabaņas stands at the far end of the Plaza Tapatia.
