If you should get lost while wandering the streets of Guanajuato, look up to the Pipila Monument to help you regain your sense of direction.
Obviously the streets of Guanajuato were not meant to handle 20th century automobile traffic. To help ease congestion, the Guanajuato River was diverted, and its river bed turned into a subterranean road which provides drivers with an easier route through the city.
The most famous of Guanajuato's narrow streets is the Callejon del Beso, the Street of the Kiss. According to legend on one side of the street lived a young lady, on the other side a young man. They fell in love, but their parents disapproved of the match. At night the lovers would secretly go out to their balconies. The street was so narrow that they could lean forward and kiss.
The University of Guanajuato is highly respected for its departments of music and theatre. Although the main university building is of recent construction, its architecture fits in well with the colonial style of the city.
