Around the city of Tlaxcala are numerous places to explore. Here are but a few...
In every town and village there are picturesque, colonial churches.
Tlaxcala is noted for its textile industry... ranging from textile factories in Santa Ana Chiautempan to little workshops, such as this one in Contla, where fabrics are woven by hand on looms.
Tizatlan, in the hills above the city of Tlaxcala, was once the seat of one of the Tlaxcalteca chieftains. Today only a few ruins remain.
A few miles from the city of Tlaxcala is the scenic waterfall of Altihuetzia.
A place which has attracted international attention in the archaeological community is the ruins of Cacaxtla. This site was discovered by tomb robbers in 1975. Cacaxtla was built by the obscure Olmeca-Xicalenca culture and was at its height more than 1000 years ago. Although the architecture is not especially imposing, the site has gained fame for its fresco paintings which show Mayan influence. In order to protect the paintings from the elements, a huge canopy was constructed over the site.
The snow covered peak of the volcano Popocatepetl looms over Cacaxtla.
This concludes our tour of Tlaxcala. I hope you have enjoyed it and will return for more travel adventures!
¡Hasta luego!
