Before we went to the USA we always wondered why Americans seem to drink so much of it in the movies. Now we know why - because it is so damn GOOD!
It also soaks up sugar - you need to put in perhaps twice as much sugar as you would in Australian coffee, to give it a similar degree of sweetness.
American coffee is different to what we call coffee in Australia - and that is a gross under-statement. For a start, when Australian's have coffee it is usually the instant type (at home), or a cappuccino (at a restaurant). (Some Australian's now use coffee plungers). Instant coffee in America is a bit like instant tea in Australia. You can get it if you look hard enough, but hardly anyone uses it.
American coffee itself comes mainly from Colombia (so I understand) whereas most of our coffee comes from anywhere and everywhere else - Brazil, Kenya, Papua New Guinea and so on. You can buy Colombian coffee in Australia but it has is a very strong and chocolaty taste.
In the USA almost all coffee is made in a drip-filter. When we were looking for a vehicle we found that every car sales yard always had a drip-filter operating continuously in the office. On our travels we found that coffee bought on the road (at diners, truck stops and so-on) is virtually always very good and very cheap - and sometimes free!
I remember getting lost on one occasion and going into a diner to ask directions. As I waited at the counter a lady came over and slapped a coffee in front of me, saying "There you are honey, I'll be with you in a moment". When I protested that I only came in for directions, not to buy a coffee she said "Oh that's all right honey, it's on the house!
Once we were on the road we began to look forward to our morning cup of coffee from the first truck-stop or diner along the way, usually a large cup, for about a dollar (or even 50 cents).
After returning to Australia one of the first things we did was to go out and buy a drip-filter coffee maker. We still enjoy our tea and instant coffee (but only a very good brand will do now), but we still put on the drip filter regularly, on special occasions or when we have visitors.
