Cancún

Cancun

A ttracting more first time and repeat visitors than any other Mexican or Caribbean resort, Cancún is more than those attributes which make any tropical destination popular. Cancún's ultimate success is derived from the inherent courtesy of its people -a courtesy so genuine as to assure an unparalleled sense of well-being and safety. Whether in the Beach Zone or the village-like Downtown, Cancún is simply a nice place to be. 0

The Town

Meandering Cancún's town is a pleasure. Divided by 'Palapa Park,' Avenues Tulúm and Yaxchilan attract the most interest from tourists. Native handicraft and brand name discount clothing stores intermingle with seafood, International and Mexican restaurants along Avenida Tulúm . It is on this street where Cancún's major supermarkets, banks and airline offices are to be found. Strolling Mariachi, Jarocho and other Mexican bands serenade the late night crowds patronizing Mexican grills and Yucatecan restaurants along Avenida Yaxchilan . Most restaurants along Avenida Yaxchilan do not open until six or seven in the evening, yet remain open into the wee hours. It is on this street where Cancún's major all-night pharmacies are to be found.

New areas in town deservedly attracting attention include the 'Cancún 2000' complex at the not-so-far north end of Avenida Tulúm (where heavily discounted clothing, and souvenir shops intermingle with, yup, both US and traditional Mexican fast food joints). The least expensive Internet Café in Cancún, Internet Plaza 2000 , is also located here. At the, again, not-so-far end of Avenida Sunyaxchen , which runs perpendicular to Avenida Yaxchilan , the truly charming Plaza Bonita is found behind the Telegraph/Post Office and Public Market 28.

Buses marked Hoteles Ruta 1 run between the Town and the Beach Zone along Avenida Tulúm , and the Beach Zone's single avenue, around-the-clock. Fares are negligible.

The Beach Zone

Along the palmed causeway that connects the mainland town to the narrow, but long, isle that is the Beach Zone, a series of monuments replicate Mexico's pre-Columbian heritage and aptly welcome the newcomer.

Between the causeway's bridge entering the Beach Zone and Punta Cancún , where the Hotel Camino Real is located, the beaches front the limpid waters of the Bahia de Isla Mujeres (Isle of Women Bay). It is along this strand where the water is placid. Its best public beach facilities are found at Playa Langosta .

Between Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc , where the Club Med is located, the beaches front the dazzling expanse of the open Caribbean. It is along this strip where Cancún's impressive Gran Turismo Hotels greet their guests with warm hospitality, but it is along this strand where the water can contain strong currents. Its best public beach is Playa Del Rey . While there are no public facilities there, the beach is enormous and just steps from it, on the lagoon, is the small, but impressive complex: Ruinas del Rey (The Ruins of the King).

Major hotels and shopping centers running along the full course of the Beach Zone feature an astonishing array of fine restaurants, posh discos, nightclubs and golf courses. The very late night crowds tend to congregate around the Convention Center where, during the day, a small museum displays artifacts collected from ancient sites from throughout the region.
