H i,

That's me, John Pastore (up there), Editor of 'The New World Gazette' and Director of 'Venture-Out'. The lizard under the newspaper is my resident EX- besuquito : Angelita (a gecko).

Here in 'El Mayab' -The Mayan Homeland- I'm alternately known as "El Maestro" for having taught English to both Mexicans and Maya (and original monologues in English for both apprentice and professional guides) -and (yes) "Dry-Back John" -for being one.

Sometimes I'm also known as "Don Gabacho."

Having spent some 20 years (nearly since Cancun's conception) living in, traveling in, guiding in, and internationally publishing the region to (among other things):

-Buy the first chartered airline seats from the US to Cancun,
-Eat scrambled turkey eggs,
-Get lost in Playa del Carmen (a long time ago),
-'Nearly' sell a golf course to the Japanese,
-(Involuntarily) launch and sustain the travel agency consortium:
"Mundo Maya",
-Deliver numerous local travel periodicals while designing, writing and editing them;
while also selling (or rather: "intercambiando") their ad spaces, inc:

'Mayan Holiday Magazine',
'Caribbean News',
'Cancun News',
'This Week Cancun';
and...

Involuntary Extracts to:

'Cancun Tips'
'Cancun Magazine',
and...
'Mundo Maya Magazine',

To, also, discover having been one of the nation's leading ghost writers...

-Catch a barracuda while inventing 'Fishsnorkeling',
-Catch my big toe while inventing 'Fishlassoing',
-Dive on top of a shark,
-Anesthetize both myself -and dentist- with tequila,
-Make a National Monument of a rather special Mayan wilderness community:
'Punta Laguna',
-Successfully "challenge the cherished views" of the international community of
Meso-American archaeologists and pre-Columbian historians
(to the delight of most, and the remorse of some),
not once but twice, with:

'The Mayan Collapse',
and
'Small People'...

To, most recently, be referred to as: "Dr." Pastore (!)
by a dozen archaeologists
(-: who knew better :-)
while a Panel Expert with the international educational project:
"MayaQuest"

-for:

-Describing the contemporary Maya,
-Redefining "sacrifice", and...
-Setting the Spanish Inquisition straight:

To have numerous email posts to academic groups archived and incorporated into the curricula of history courses at Berkelely, Maryknoll, etc...

To -finally- having become the region's most renown, self-proclaimed expert on
'The Aztec Sidestep' ('Montezuma's Revenge')...

I'm now back to operating a travel, and guide service, for those who wish to
optimize their travel in, and knowledge of 'El Mayab'.
(Whew!)

If heading this way, do yourself a favor (and me too), and do let me know. The accompanying pages should let you know if that's what you want to do, and if so:
'Ka Xiik Teech Ya Utzil'...

Meantime:
