O nly minutes from Cancun, the Rio Manatee has been the fishing and lobstering grounds for only itinerant Mayan fishermen since the Spanish arrival. Extending from a bit north from Cancun's fishermen's suburb of Puerto Juarez to Cape Catoche, the coastal region of the Rio Manatee, once the most heavily populated area of the ancient Maya, now represents the largest unspoiled tract of nature on the whole of the Yucatán Peninsula. Graduating from mangroves coastward to wild ranges of dry jungle landward, the region is permeated with a maze of waterways harboring eagles, egrets, ocelot, jaguar and more.Your day excursion begins with a rendezvous at the Puerto Juarez Pier for Isla Mujeres, then overwater to the outback camp of "Wild Paradise" (and vicinity) for leisurely observation-cruising amid its jade wetlands aboard local launches. Guests can assist in hand line trolling. Underground springs emerging in mangroved lagoons offer swimming opportunities, and the casual, but precise, casting of hand lines for Pargo (Mangrove Snapper). Photo opportunities abound; and a light lunch is served on board. An early evening supper of the day's divvy of catch is included (less drinks & tips) at a beachside restaurant upon return. The excursion is not for those looking for lots of action -it is tranquil, and can offer a penetrating glimpse, not only of the natural environs of the Rio Manatee, but also of the recluse few Maya who have gleaned its waters for generations.
