Venture-Out
El Mayab (The Mayan Homeland)
to
XEL-HÁ
Painted Water
I'm 5' 5 1/2"...
The miniature Ruins of Xel-Ha offers tantalizing theories as to their being. Amid a mini-Disco, murals depicting calendar notations, birds and jaguar are found here. Its large cenote attracts a multitude of wildlife including at least one black jaguar which recently, like an old dog crossing a road (though obviously an adolescent), crossed paths with the author/guide and his tourist companions...
Rarely visited, Xel-Há has, nevertheless, been delightfully integral to Venture-Out's Definitive Excursion #1 for the past ten years.
Dos Palmas
Two Palms
Featuring a backwoods Mayan community gone even more organic than they had always been, Dos Palmas offers a refreshingly cold dip in an open cave-mouth's stream (cenote). Its our perfect bring-along lunch spot. Also, its small museum (an indigenous affair) beats Cancun's!
Also rarely visited, Dos Palmas offers special insight into the contemporary Maya during Venture-Out's Definitive Excursion #1.
