Achievement award for KLIA
Business Times, Monday, April 26, 1999
THE first phase of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) was
last night conferred the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award for
this year by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).
The award was presented by Energy, Communications and Multimedia
Minister Datuk Leo Moggie to KL International Airport Bhd (KLIAB)
managing director Tan Sri Jamilus Hussein at the IEM's 40th annual
dinner in Kuala Lumpur.
The airport was officially opened by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku
Ja'afar in June last year.
The successful completion of the first phase by KLIAB was a major
milestone for Malaysia's construction as well as civil engineering, IEM
president Datuk Ahmad Zaidee Laidin said.
KLIA is an airport built to 21st century specifications and the largest
civil engineering project undertaken by Malaysia this century.
Zaidee said what made KLIA a class act to follow was the sophisticated
computerised system called the Total Airport Management System
which integrated and interfaced electronic information within the airport
assuring the maximum flow of information for operations and
management.
"Never in the history af a nation has so many diverse management
disciplines, professional and technical, skilled and semi-skilled labour
been mobilised to successfully complete the project for the benefit of so
many people from all over the world," he said.
The recipient for Contribution to the Engineering Profession in Malaysia
Award for 1999 was Director General of the Public Works Department
Tan Sri Omar Ibrahim for his contribution to the engineering profession,
particularly in the field of water supply and resources engineering and his
support of IEM activities.
Eight students were also awarded the IEM Gold Medals for being best
final year engineering students at local universities.
Three IEM members were awarded the Tan Sri Yusoff Prize in the IEM
Technical Paper Awards category.
They were Ahmad Zaidee for "Opportunities in Engineering Education",
Datuk Ng Keng Keong for "Jiangjin Bridges, Sichuan, China Planning
Design and Contruction" and Chee Meng Sang for "The Asean
Engineer, Custodian of National Assets".
Meanwhile, Tan Sri Raja Zainal Prize was awarded to Dr Mohd Zainal
Muhamad for his paper titled "Managing Technology Innovation for
Sustainable Development" and Dr Othman A. Karim for his paper titled
"Computational Fluid Dynamics Application for Flow Patterns in Local
Scour Holes Caused by Turbulent Water Jets". - Bernama
