Belize:
Money:
The currency of Belize is the Dollar. The dollar is made up of 100 cents. Coins consist of 1, 5, 10, 25, & 50 cents. Paper money (bills, notes) consists of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, & 100 Dollars. US $ can be used in most locations as optional currency. |
Costs:
Accommodation in Belize is higher than Mexico, Guatemala, or Honduras. Prices on the cayes run from around $20.00 and up on Caulker, to $25.00 and up on Ambergris. Rubies in San Pedro is a nice clean, beach front hotel. San Ignacio prices start around $ 15.00 and up, Central Hotel is good value. Placentia has prices from $20.00 and up, try Julia's budget hotel. Camping is cheap and costs usually $2.00 and up. If there is no camping available, ask the locals if you can set up in their yard.
Food prices run around $3.00 for a simple meal, seafood dishes like lobster are around $15.00. Daily costs typically run around $20.00 if you really cut back. Otherwise expect to pay $25.00 -$30.00 per day for a room and good eats.
Guatemala:

The currency of Guatemala is the Quetzal and is named after the national bird. The Quetzal is made up of 100 centavos. Coins consist of 1, 5, 10, & 25 centavos. Paper money (bills, notes) consists of 50 centavos, 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, & 100 Quetzals. US $ can be used in most locations as optional currency. |
Costs:
Accommodation in Guatemala can be good value. Expect to pay more in the
touristy places. Rooms can be had for as little as $2.00. In Antigua, try the rooms available in the old coffee
plantation ($12.00) just 6 blocks south from the park central on 5a Avendia Sur. The place has charm!
In Panajachel the prices tend to be a little more. Expect to pay from $10.00 and up. If you would like to get away
from it all, try Santa Cruz La Laguna, just a short ferry ride west of Panajachel. There are only two decent hotels
here, try the one set in a little garden, it is nice. They have a few rooms, and offer meals. The owners, a younger
couple, are really friendly, and he plays a mean guitar.
If you are heading up to Tikal and the ruins, it is best to stay around Flores. This nice little town is situated
on an island, and is quiet. On the mainland next to the Flores causeway is the town of Santa Elena, it has some
good hotel values. Try the Hotel Jade, definitely good value ($3.00), and convenient!. Camping is cheap and costs
usually $2.00 and up. If there is no camping available, ask the locals if you can set up in their yard.
Food prices run around $2.00 for a simple meal, But expect to pay around $3.00. Beer can be had for $0.75 (Gallo is the local brand). Daily costs typically run around $15.00 if you really cut back. Otherwise expect to pay $20.00 -$25.00 per day for a room, good eats, and the occasional beer

Honduras:

The currency of Honduras is the Lempira. The "Lemp" is made up of 100 centavos. Coins consist of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, & 50 centavos. Paper money (bills, notes) consist of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, & 100 Lempira. US $ can be used in most locations as optional currency. |
Costs in Honduras vary with location, and the amount of travelers, but
tend to be the same as Guatemala, and Mexico. Out on the Islands expect to pay around $20.00 min for a room. Typical
costs are more like $35.00 per person. Meals on the islands usually runs around $1.50 for simple rice and beams,
to $7.00 for fresh fish dinners. Beer costs around $0.75 per bottle, and highballs around $1.00 per. Keep in mind
that Utila is the cheapest of the islands and Guanaja is the costliest. Car rentals in '97 were $45.00 per 24 hr
for a Suzuki jeep.
Back on the mainland prices drop about 25-50 % for rooms, meals, and transportation. Places like San Pedro Sula,
and Copan are about the same as the Islands, but cheap places can be found. Tela can be fairly cheap when it comes
to rooms, but you have to shop around. Camping is offered in a few places, when in doubt ask around, and maybe
you can pitch your tent in someone's yard. It has been done.
