About Guatemala...

Guatemala has diverse and varied geography, climate, and culture. The country ranges from coastal tropical beaches, to dry arid landscape, to lush tropical rain forest, to high mountainous plateaus. The northern Peten area is typically low lying hot tropical jungle. Here the famous Mayan ruins of Tikal can be found. The north western portion from the Pacific following the Mexican border tends to be high volcanic mountain terrain. The area south of Guatemala city is mostly dryer and can be arid. Of course there are the beaches, both on the Pacific and Caribbean sides.

What to do and see:

Guatemala offers little in the way of diving and snorkeling. It's small portion of coastline on the Caribbean side has unfortunately few reefs. However other water sports are available, eg: sailboarding, swimming, boating, fishing. The Pacific coast has little in the way of beaches, and these tend to be out of the way, and not very nice, but OK if you need that watery dip.
Tikal, in the northern Peten Jungle, is an excellent example of Mayan archeology. The place is enormous, and offers a truly fantastic picture opportunity. Take a minimum of two days to really get to know the place.
Up in the mountains around Lake Atitlan, you will find Volcanos (yes active), beautiful villages, tons of local crafts, and wonderful people. Check out places like Antigua, Panajachel, Chichicastenago, and many of the villages around the Lake area. Hiking, trekking, and just lazing around are favorite past times.

Guatemala's people, in particular the Locals living in and around Antigua, Lake Atitlan, and farther north are truly wonderful, The colors, and variety within their garments are spectacular. There is barely a traveler who has not purchased something of the local crafts.
