Easkey, County Sligo

Easkey is a small seaside village situated on the Easkey river in Co. Sligo in the west of Ireland. It is recognized as one of the foremost surfing areas in Europe and it is very popular with water sports enthusiasts. The Northern Ireland Surfing Association is headquartered in Easkey. Several major surfing competitions are held there each year. The Inter Provincial Championship is held in May, the Esporit Championship in July/August and the Tiki Cold Water Classic in September. A surfing information center is located on the main street and stocks a wide range of surfing and watersports accessories.

There is excellent sea trout and salmon fishing on the Easkey river . The season runs from February thru October and permits may be obtained at Fordes Shop in Easkey.

I spent several nights at a nice hostel, the "BARR NA DTONN" on main street. The one restaurant in town is directly across the street from the hostel and serves breakfast and dinner.

Take a short walk to the rugged coastline. There the remains of the Roslee castle stand. The castle is surrounded by other ruined fortresses.

A day trip from Easkey took me up to Ballyshannon Co. Donegal and return. Sites to visit in Sligo Town are the Dominican Abbey, Yeats Memorial Museum and the Sligo County Museum. The poet and playwright William Butler Yeats was probably the most famous son of County Sligo. Memorabilia in the County musuem include many photographs and letters of the man himself and a copy of the Nobel Prize medal awarded him in 1933. I also visited Yeats burial place in Drumcliffe just north of Sligo town.

At the County Sligo musuem you will also find a tribute to Michael Coleman, a close rival to Yeats. Coleman was the most influential Irish traditional musician ever . Fritz Kreisler, the greatest of classical violinists. wrote that even he could not attempt the kind of music Michael Coleman played, even if he practiced for a thousand years.

As you cross into Co. Donegal you will enter the town of Ballyshannon. Stop in at Donegal Parian China factory store. Their pieces are completely hand made without any mechanical aids. Donegal Parian China does not sell seconds or permit employees or family members to buy or take seconds. Over twenty percent of all production is considered unsatisfactory and intentionally destroyed in order to create unparreled quality parian china giftware.

If you still have additional interest in china , drive the short distance from Ballyshannon to Co. Fermanagh then to Belleek and tour the Belleek Pottery works.

For another day trip from Easkey drive west to Ballina, Co. Mayo then north along Killala bay to Killala and beyond and explore the rugged coast of the northern coast of County Mayo. North Mayo has one of the greatest number of Stone Age Tombs in Europe. The area around the town of Killala has many sites of Cultural and historical ruins and Stone Age settlements. While in Killala visit the Foxford Wollen Mills. Ballina, County Mayo's largests town offers great shopping and a variety of pubs and restaurants. Easkey is a fine place to spend a day or two just to relax while being located a short drive to many of the attractions this area of Ireland has to offer.
