While in Sydney I went on a number of outings with the UTS Outdoor Adventure Club . Here're some of the highlights: |
Don't ask me where Mt. Wilson is. I don't know, except that that was where it said we were going in the blurb about the trip. I figure it must have been one of the big hills that were all around the canyons we were traversing in what're called the Blue Mountain, but who knows......
I caught the train out to Bell Station (a wee place in the Blue Mountains) at a sickeningly early hour or Saturday morning. After everyone else had managed to arrive fashionably late we headed over to our campsite, and then donned our wetsuits for our first canyon of the weekend: Defour Canyon. We took a beautiful scenic walk down into the canyon and then spent what was left of the morning and most of the afternoon scrambling, climbing, wading, and swimming (brrrrrr, cold) through the canyon. It was an awsome experience!!
After a brisk hike out we were taken to a rock face to learn how to abseil. That all went smoothly although it was interesting forcing myself off a perfectly good cliff top onto a not quite so safe seeming rope.
On day two we did three abseils in Serendipity Canyon on the way the Li-Lowing phase of our trip. After lunch we inflated our Li-Lows (Air Mattresses) and floated/scrambled over rocks peacefully down the river. Some people didn't get to float quite so peacefully because they were accompanied by the sounds of air rapidly leaving their Li-Lows. They tended to paddle faster than the rest of us so as to reach dry ground and inflate their mattresses before they were body surfing!
For this trip we headed out from Martin's Friday evening so as to arrive in Canberra around midnight. We stayed the night at his brother Bernard's place so that we could get a sort of early start on the day. We explored three caves on the Saturday and the Sunday. Signature cave, Punchbowl Cave, and Dip Cave. Signature gave us all a chance to explore a phreatic maze and get stuck in really small holes. Punchbowl was really confusing, with multiple levels all criss crossing over top of each other, and Dip cave was big, more open, and easy to understand!
Here's a few of us and the Buddha that the seven of us spent over an hour making in Diprotodon Pit (also know as the phallic chamber). Diprotodon Pit was barely large enough to hold all of us, but had copious amounts of moist clay. As such it was the perfect venue for us to unleash our truly creative spirits! |
