These are some phrases you might hear in Chile.  Drop one of these in casual conversation, and you'll be sure to sound cool!  There's more to learning to speak Spanish than just vocabulary. It's important to know the different terms familiar to different areas. These aren't literal translations, but loose English equivalents. If you come up with any different phrases or equivalents, send them to me and I'll put them up.

  • Éco. .................................. Yeah, that's right.  École.
  • ¡Adonde la viste? ............ No way! Where in the world did you hear that?!
  • ¡Anda a freir monos! ....... Go jump in the lake!
  • ¡Buena onda! ................... Cool!
  • ¿Cachay? ......................... You know? ¿Cachay la onda?¿Cachay la mote?
  • ¿Cómo está la pega? ..... How's work?
  • ¡Nada que ver! ................. No way!
  • ¡No estoy ni ahí! ............... I don't even give a darn!
  • ¡Oye, mi 'jito(a) rico(a)! ... Hey, babe! ¡Oye, guachito(a)!
  • ¡Qué fome! ....................... That's terrible! What a shame. Too bad.
  • ¡Qué lata! .......................... What a pain! What a shame. How boring.
  • ¿Qué onda? ..................... What's up?
  • ¡Qué plancha! ................... How embarrassing!
  • ¿Quién se cree? .............. Who do you think you are?
