The Spanish spoken in Chile is standard for the most part, but there are some words which are different from what you learn in Spanish 101. The difference between the Spanish spoken and Spain and the Spanish spoken in Chile, is similar to the difference between British English and American English.

  • cahuinero(a) n. someone who gossips
  • caleta adj. a lot, harto (often used ironically to mean "a little" or "nothing") n. small port or bay
  • camanchaca n. thick low-lying fog
  • capo(a) adj. smart, sharp, on the ball
  • carabinero n. Chilean policeman
  • cargar v. to annoy, to bother ¡Me carga ese compadre!
  • cartucho n. paper cone used to put french fries or candy in, cambucho, n. one who is immoral yet pretends to be moral
  • chacotero(a) n. jokester, comedian
  • chacra n. small farm, orchard, field
  • chalas n. flip flops, thongs
  • chamullero(a) n. a shyster, con man
  • chamullo n. a big lie, spin, embezzlement, fraud, gossip
  • chamuyento(a) adj. the state of being a charlatan, embellisher, someone who exaggerates or tells tall tales, grupiento
  • chascón(a) n. someone with messy hair
  • chichón n. lump, bump, cototo
  • chirimollo n. bad check
  • chorear v. to annoy, fregar, v. to steal
  • chorero n. thief
  • choriflai adv. cool, groovy
  • chori adj. cool
  • choro adj. cool, neat, adj. aggressive, bullying
  • chorrera adv. thief
  • chueco(a) adj. crooked, wayward, bad, to not keep commitments
  • chula adj. having no class, gross, disgusting
  • chupaflor n. hummingbird, colibrí
  • chupamedia n. brown-noser, teacher's pet
  • colectivo n. collective taxi, taxi that follows a specific route
  • cooperar v. to do something bad to someone, v. to co-operate
  • combarbalita n. whitish marble-like stone peculiar to the area near the town of Combarbala
  • confort n. toilet paper, a name brand of bathroom tissue
  • combo n. punch, blow with the fist
  • copihue n. Chile's national flower, a fleshy, red, trumpet-shaped lily
  • copucha n. gossip, chisme
  • copuchento(a) n. someone with a big mouth, gossiper, eavesdropper, someone who meddles
  • cornudo n. man who has a cheating wife
  • costanera n. costal road
  • cototo adj. cool, rad, n. bump, lump, bruise
  • creido(a) adj. stuck-up, arrogant, sobrado
  • cueca n. Chilean national dance
  • cuñado n. dude, n. brother-in-law
  • encachado(a) adj. sharp dressed, spiffy, cool
  • engrupir v. to boast, to embellish, to say that you're something you're not
  • feria persa n. flea market

  • llapa n. something extra, something left over
  • macanudo adj. cool, excellent

  • mateo n. someone very intelligent or studious, n. nerd

  • payador n. traveling folk singer who accompanies himself on the guitar
