In 1984 the theme was wind. Banners lined the street, streamers hung down inside the bridge. And along the path to Point State Park were little boxes, built like birdhouses, but filled with wind poems.

Sometimes, the art was really eye-opening!

The year was 1988. In Point State Park, Tippi encountered this assemblage of ?? stuff hanging in some trees. Was it art or was it junk? Was the artist trying to say that junk was art, or was it the other way around?
That same year, she met a wonderful bristly macrame pig.

This one was a feast for the ears! The sonic forest was erected in PPG plaza in 1994. The posts were sensitive to the movement of onlookers and gave off tones - some high, some low, some chimes, some more like moans. A very interactive forest.

While overhead, reflected in the many faceted mirrored building, fish glided as in a giant goldfish bowl, and another year, acrobats angled in the wind.

From String Quartets to the Banjo Club, from blues to Cajun, there is music and dance on 4 different stages. Follow your ear!

And much, much more. I didn't mention video, or film, or the juried shows. Nor did I mention the commercial sector where craftsmen ply their wares. And food - the food is there, but it is fast, and greasy, and it is better to hike up the avenue to one of the better restaurants.

The Three Rivers Arts Festival occurs every year during the first two weeks of June; you'll find it all over downtown Pittsburgh but the focal point is at the Point. For this year's (2000) schedule, go to www.artsfestival.net
