IN MY LIFETIME ...THE EPIC OF GRIF

WHO I AM WHERE I'M FROM AND HOW I CAME TO THIS PLACE

THE COMING

My name is Phillip Andrew Griffiths. At press time I was 30 years old, having come into this on the 12th day of January 1970. For what its worth, That makes me a Capricorn. I was born in an old brick house on a hill in the parish of Clarendon, which lies in the center of Jamaica.

At that time it was common practice for babies to be delivered by mid-wife since the nearest hospital was 17 treacherous miles away and buses ran twice a day(once in each direction. So it was by necessity, not by choice that my mother gave birth to me on my grandmothers bed.

THE EARLY YEARS

My earliest credible memory is of my first day in school. I remember I was sweeping the yard, when the announcement came that it was time to get ready for school. In retrospect, it seems odd that a boy of 2 1/2 year old who be given the mamalian task of area beautification, but If my memory serves me right, this was an important part of my daily routine. Hence I flat out refused to go to school, or anywhere for that matter, until I was finished with my yard. Or maybe I kinda knew what was in store for me.

LET MISEDUCATION BEGIN

Basic School

I attende basic school (the Jamaican version of kindergarden) at James hill basic school in Clarendon. I dont remember a whole lot about it. I do remember though that the daily lucch was BULGA, only a real yardie would know what that is.

I remember that my teacher was fascinated with my eyes and eye brows and would never beat me. ( corporal punishment was/is summarily meeted out in jamaican schools) Since that time, may other women have drowned themselves in thes damn eyes of mine.

When I was about four I left Clarendon to go live with my mother in Kingston (then the only city in Jamaica) I went to another Basic school in Greenwich town which is in the heart of the infamous Kingston 13. But my time there was short because I managed to become an accident victim shortly there after. While there I did manage to fall in love for the first time, I don't remember her name just that she had long black hair and a beautiful smile. Come on y'all I was only four. She gave me a pencil case and I gave her my heart.
