Dr Who is the World's longest running TV sci-fi series. It ran on BBC Television from 1963 to 1989. The Doctor is an alien time traveller exiled from his world, Gallifrey. His craft, the TARDIS, is disguised as a British police telephone box of the 1960's. It should change its appearance to blend in with its surroundings but its Chameleon Circuit is broken. It is trans-dimensional (bigger on the inside than out). The Doctor is a Time Lord. When a Time Lord dies his body regenerates into a new form and the Doctor displays a new appearance and personality. The TV series has featured seven Doctors, each played by a different actor.
The First Doctor Played by William Hartnell as an absent minded, bad tempered but kindly grandfather figure (1963 to 1966). The First Doctor stories introduced the Daleks, Sensorites, the Zarbi, the Meddling Monk, the Toymaker, and the Cybermen. The majority of historical stories occurred during this period. This Doctor travelled with Susan, Barbara, Ian, Vicki, Steven, Katarina, Sara, Dodo, Polly and Ben.
The Second Doctor Played by Patrick Troughton as a cosmic hobo character (1966 to 1969). The Second Doctor fought with the Daleks and Cybermen and introduced the Macra, the Ice Warriors, the Yeti, the Dominators, and the Krotons. The Time Lords, the sonic screw driver and UNIT made their first appearance under this Doctor. Polly, Ben, Jamie, Victoria and Zoe were the companions.
The Third Doctor Played by Jon Pertwee as a dashing man of action (1970 to 1974). The Doctor, mainly exiled on Earth, was accompanied by Liz, Jo and Sarah Jane. UNIT made many appearances. Apart from the Daleks, enemies included the Nestene, Silurians, the Master, the Daemons, the Sea Devils, the Sontarens, Ogrons, and Draconians.
The Fourth Doctor Played by Tom Baker as an eccentric bohemian (1974 to 1981). The companions were Sarah Jane, Harry, Leela, Romana (I and II), K9, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan. UNIT made fewer appearances. Davros, Zygons, Sutekh, Morbius, Weng-Chiang and the Rutans joined the Daleks and Cybermen against this popular Doctor.
The Fifth Doctor Played by Peter Davison as a vulnerable young man (1982 to 1984). The Mara and Terileptils were introduced. The Silurians, Daleks and Cybermen returned. Companions were Adric, Tegan, Nyssa, Turlough and Peri.
The Sixth Doctor Played by Colin Baker as an eccentric alien (1984 to 1986). Peri and Mel were the companions. Sil and the Rani joined the Daleks and Cybermen as enemies.
The Seventh Doctor Played by Sylvester McCoy as a mysterious Time Lord (1987 to 1989). With Mel and Ace he fought against The Rani, Davros and Fenric. |
