History

On the final day of the season Wolverhampton Wanderers were top of the table but lost 0 - 1 at Sunderland. Arsenal beat Bolton Wanderers 5 - 0 to win their 5th Championship in 8 years.

One week before the season ended, any of 11 clubs could have been relegated including FA Cup finalists, Huddersfield Town. On the final day, 6 teams were bottom with 36 points. Birmingham City, Grimsby Town, Portsmouth and Stoke City all won. Huddersfield Town beat Manchester City 1 - 0 to stay up. Manchester City become the only club to be relegated the season after winning the Championship. Ironically, they had finished as top scorers.

Only 16 points separated the top and bottom clubs.
