Colombia The earthquake-proof Santa Barbara Church in Momphos, a pretty colonial town on the banks of the Magdalena River.
Chile Thatched church at the 4000m high village of Parinacota.

Russia A Russian Orthodox church, complete with onion domes; part of Novadavichii Monastery in Moscow.
India Syrian Orthodox church in the city of Trivandrum (Kerala State). Christianity has existed here since 1st Century AD.
Egypt The Greek Orthodox St Katherine Monastery (4th Century) in the Sinai Desert.

Norway Wooden stave church near Oslo dating from the 1200s.
Islam Syria The 6th Century Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, covered with mosaics. It is a converted Byzantine church.
Pakistan The Badshahi Mosque in Lahore is one of the largest in the world, holding 60,000 people. It was built by the Moghul Emperor, Aurangzeb in 1676.
Egypt The Al Azhar Mosque dates from 972 AD and is the site of the world's oldest university (988 AD).
Indonesia Cirebon Mosque in Java.
Turkey Agia Sofia, built in 548 as a Byzantine church and converted into a mosque in 1453. (Istanbul)
Hinduism Nepal Nyatapola Temple (1702) in the Kathmandu Valley.
India The massive Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneshwar. The walled complex dates from 1104.
Bali Tanah Lot is set on a coastal lava outcrop. It is dedicated to the spirits of the sea.
Judaism Israel The Western (Wailing) Wall is all that remains of Solomon's temple in Jerusalem. It is the holiest site of the Jews.
India The Jewish Synagogue in Cochin (Kerala State). A Jewish community has lived in India from 6th Century BC.
Sikhism India The Golden Temple at Amritsar, the holiest shrine of the Sikhs. It was built in 1764.
Buddhism Thailand Young Buddhist monks at the Temple of Dawn in Bangkok.
Tibet Monks at Sakya Monastery built in the 13th century. The walled complex covers an area of 18,000m2.
Indonesia Pilgrims walking around Borobudur, 200m square and built in 850AD.
Burma Reclining Buddha at the Shwe Dagon Pagoda in Rangoon, dating from 1769.
Shinto Japan The Heian-Jingu shrine in Kyoto, dating from 1895.
Bahai Israel Shrine in Haifa dedicated to the founder of the Bahai faith who was executed in 1850.
Taoism Vietnam A statue of Lao Tse, founder of Taoism, in the Khanh Van Nam Pagoda (1942) in Ho Chi Minh City.
Jainism India Interior of the Dilwara Temple at Mount Abu in the state of Rajastan. The exquisitely carved marble temple dates from 1081.
Confucian China Dacheng Hall (1724), part of the main temple in Qufu, the birthplace of the founder, Kong Fu Dz.
Cao Dai Vietnam The colourful Cao Dai temple at Tay Ninh.
Mayan Guatemala Quiche shaman tending a shrine at an unrestored Izapan temple dating from 5th century AD.
Guatemala Shrine to Maximon at Santiago de Atitlan. Maximone is a cross between a Mayan god and Judas Iscariot. He is the smoking and drinking god.
Parsee Pakistan A Parsee temple in Karachi. The Parsees are the fire worshipping descendants of Persian Zoroastrinism.
