SortiSorti in Canchungo, August 1998. Many of us first met Sorti when he was the errand-runner and water boy for a succession of Ho Chi Minh High School's Peace Corps English teachers. He started doing that when he was about eight years old. Look how he's grown! He ran a few errands for me while I was in Canchungo. |
SortiSorti is letting his hair grow so that it may one day match that of his idols - Bob Marley and Ciro of Canchungo. |
DadaDada of Bairro Ajuda at Jão Landim, August 1998. Dada sent most of her children to Dakar to stay with relatives during the war so they can continue their studies. When I saw her this Summer, she was staying in Bula and working part time as a cook for the Catholic Mission. She had just found out that everything, down to the last bucket and utensil, had been looted from her home and the neighboring PCV home in Bairro Ajuda. Her house had not been hit by shelling, but many of her neighbor's houses were destroyed. |
Dada sends her mantenhas to all GB RPCV's, especially those who have been her neighbors. |
