C'EST LA VIE |
I'm not a summer person. Nor am I a winter person. In fact, sometimes I get the feeling that I'm not a person at all. What I am, is a bundle of likes and dislikes as detailed below:
FOOD
First and foremost, I love food. I devour it, I crave for it. And as mentioned earlier, I'm a hopeless, guiltless carnivore. I believe that chicken is the best thing on two legs after Salma Hayek. And there is this wonderful Kerala dish called Puttu, which is the most versatile eatable I've ever come across considering that you can eat it with meat, banana, grams, papad, pickle, sambar, yoghurt, milk, sugar, cheese, mangoes etc. .
BOOKS
I really dig humor. That's why I'm such an unabashed admirer of PG Wodehouse and Ogden Nash. Among the funniest books I've read are: God: The Ultimate Autobiography, Three Men in a Boat(Jerome K Jerome) Catch 22,(Joseph Heller) Psmith in the City(PG Wodehouse), The Meaning of Liff(Douglas Adams). I love the Just William series of Richmal Crompton- The toughest, funniest children's series ever written.
Foucault's Pendulum (Umberto Eco), Catcher in the Rye(JD Salinger), To Kill a Mockingbird(Harper Lee) are a few of my other alltime favorite books. Oscar Wilde, O Henry, Roald Dahl Ed Mcbain John Steinbeck and Vaikom Mohammed Basheer are others who know how to use that pen.
MOVIES
I grew up on the movies of Mohanlal. I was fortunate to have grown up in the golden era of Malayalam movies. As for the stuff they churn out nowadays, all I can say is that I don't regret being out of Kerala. In Hollywood, apart from Mr. Hoffman, Mr. De Niro and Mr. Nicholson, I also tremendously enjoy watching Steve Buscemi, James Woods, Joe Pesci, John Malkovich, Sean Penn, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey.
MUSIC:
AR Rahman comes periliously close to being God.Mohammed Rafi
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,Queen,U2,Iron Maiden ,,Eagles are all part of the pantheon.
AND.. I love watching cricket, doing crosswords, watching Nature programs on Discovery Channel, beaches, paddy fields, shopping for second hand books in Churchgate, Mumbai, driving through the jacaranda-lined roads of Bangalore, black coffee in the night, beer on summer days, vodka at all times, girls with nose rings, black lingerie, grumbling, ON THE OTHER HAND.. I hate the usage 'Pure Vegetarian', which somehow imples that non-vegetarians are impure and thus children of a lesser god. And also the term South Indian, which puts us all in a different country as opposed to "mainland India". The term "down south" and the all inclusive unoriginal term "Bollywood" for Indian Cinema is but another reflection of all the tendencies discussed above. I loathe fanatics of all faith and ideologies, rapists, terrorists, child abusers, pretentiousness, double standards, unclean toiles, pompous know-alls(Google's children), androgynous models, the guys who coin puns in today's print media and those that think up today's television commercials. Ain't I a fun guy?
