These days people cross the R i o G r a n d e to get into this country, and the Migra tries to keep people out, but before the Spanish-American War, there were actually times when the M e x i c a n s were trying to keep Americans out of Mexico. When the United States took a big chunk 'o Texas and New Mexico from Mexico, there were people who didn't want to join the U S of A. La Mesilla NM was a town that did its best to stay Spanish.
