Elephants - Our favorite places for elephants were Samburu and
Sweetwater. We saw relatively few elephants at the other parks, but it
depends on the time of year.
Hippos - They look big and slow, but that's only half right. Running
at 30 MPH, they kill more tourists than the tour drivers.
Zebras - We saw two types of Zebras, Common Zebras and Grevys Zebras.
The Grevys Zebras have narrower stripes that go down to a white belly, compared
with the wider stripes that wrap around the common Zebra.
And now the Gnus - Over a million Wildebeest (also called Gnus because of
the sound they make) cross from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in
Kenya in search of food and water. The ones the lions and crocodiles don't
get do it again next year.
Giraffe - There are 3 types of Giraffe - Reticulated, Masai, and
Rothschild. We saw Reticulated Giraffe in Samburu and Sweetwaters, and
Masai Giraffe everywhere else (except the Ngorongoro Crater, which has no
giraffe - it's too steep for them to climb).
Impala - Impala travel in herds consisting of a male and his harem (as many
as 30 or more females), and bachelor herds, made up of males without
females. Chevys are known to travel alone.
