Occidental Alumni Weekend -- pg. 3

Lunch "through the line," again eating in the Old Union.  Lots of different choices, and I ended up taking some pieces of pizza, some melon slices, a few other things, and tucking them into plastic bags to save for later -- I wasn't at all hungry after the huge breakfast, and I wasn't signed up for any dinner, since Saturday night was the night for class reunion dinners.  Ended up with a late picnic lunch/supper under the trees in the Quad -- very pleasant.

I passed on the official Alumni Convocation, but later attended another talk, this time by an Oxy grad who had involved herself with Mars exploration.  Held in Norris Hall -- which, once I got there, I remembered from Combined Science classes and Ken Kurtz' American lit class -- it was an interesting overview on what we know and don't know so far about Mars, but I must confess that the auditorium darkened for slides and the warm afternoon made me very drowsy, and I know I dropped off now and again during the lecture.  Now, really, I never did that during class.  Really!

By the time we got out of the talk, they were again setting up the Quad for the various reunion dinners.  There was an "all class reception" to begin with, again with a no-host bar, and lots of tasty hors d'oevres.   They had brought the tiger down from the Old Union to reign majestically over the central table, surrounded by flowers and other decorations.  Very festive.  I helped myself to some treats, sat and watched the people meet and mingle.  There were a few faculty I actually recognized -- Frank Jocelyn, for one -- I had him for Religion in Literature, where I wrote a paper on Canticle for Leibowitz.  He looked sooo old.  I guess he is.   Omar Paxton was there, too (Drama), and he doesn't look a whit older.  I never had him for a class -- he was just one of those characters everyone knew.  John McMenamin was there, but I only knew that by reading his name tag -- again, a professor I never had for a class.  There were a couple others I didn't recognize, and no one else I did.  I thought about saying hello to Dr. Jocelyn, but he was deep in conversation with his colleagues, and then disappeared and I didn't see him again.  So I really never did encounter anyone I knew from my student days.

After most of the classes had had their official pictures taken (getting them gathered together and lined up was like, as they say, herding cats!) and they began to go off to their various reunion dinner sites, I gathered my cameras and books and headed back to the dorm.   I sat out on the front porch again for some time, watching the sun set across campus, and finally went up to bed.
