To get there you can fly to Pisa, Florence, Genova or Bologna and hire a car (cheaper to book the car from England).
You can often find budget fares on the internet.

Or you can drive all the way through Champagne, Eastern France, the French, Swiss and Italian Alps and the Ligurian mountains.
It is approximately 850 miles from Calais using the St. Bernard Pass (slightly more through the Mont Blanc tunnel) on motorway-standard roads virtually all the way.
