Back in the UK, when the family got fish and chips I used to sometimes have a pie, always steak and kidney, in an aluminium foil case with sloping sides eaten with a knife and fork. How wrong that was.
Now I know the proper way to eat a pie |
It took me some time to get used to the Australian style of Pies. I had problems with sauce at first. I eat a lot of sauce - its great with macaroni cheese, which even Australians would baulk at. When I got my first Australian Pie, from the Mag-Pie shop in Collingwood, I was asked 'Sauce with that?'. I replied 'Yes, a little', and it came back to me with a lake of sauce on the top of the Pie, and as I walked home to eat the Pie, the sauce mushed into the paper bag. This was another mistake - Pies should be eaten in the instant, in the milk bar or on the run. I ate the Pie with its lake of sauce alright - now, a Pie without sauce would taste strange. |
I love the Pie it's so Aussie. If I had a Pie company, it would have to be The Most Australian Pie Company ever...
A Pie is a real Aussie guy's kind of a feed. Take a look at some real Aussie pie eaters. Those guys sure eat a lot of pie!
