Outline Of Rites for Hajj al-Tamatt'u

 

TEXT in Denotes acts which are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL for Hajj to be VALID.

TEXT in Denotes acts which are REQUIRED.

TEXT in Denotes acts which are RECOMMENDED.

 

Prior to 8th Dhul Hijjah

  1. When you arrive in Makka, you MUST be in a state of Ihram. It behooves to complete the Umrah at the first opportunity.

  2. Perform the Tawaf ul-Qudum. The First of the THREE MANDATORY Tawaf of Hajj.

  3. After Tawaf, you should pray two raka behind the Maquamu Ibraheem. A Waajib task.

  4. To complete the Umrah, you should drink Zamzam and perform Saiy.

  5. On finishing Saiy, perform Halq. Shaving your head completely is preferred for men. Women should clip hair about one-finger-length.

  6. After performing the Umrah, the you should take off their Ihram and wear normal clothes.

  7. While staying in Makka, it is advisable to perform additional Umrah before the actual Hajj Day.

On 8th Dhul Hijjah.

  1. Put on Ihram with Niyya for Hajj.

  2. Recite Talbiya from Miquat or from the staying place at Makka.

  3. Set out for Mina for Mabeet preferrably after Fajr. A map of the region.

  4. Pray Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib & Ishaa in Mina. "Qasr" conditions apply: Zuhr, Asr and Ishaa are 2 raka' only but at their PROPER times. Do NOT combine prayers, pray at proper times.

  5. Stay night at Mina. Pray Fajr in the morning. Most Hujjaj are put up in tents in encampments according to his/her nationality.

On 9th Dhul Hijjah. The Arafat Day

  1. Leave Mina for Arafat early but AFTER Fajr. Take a bath before leaving.

  2. You MUST arrive in Arafat before MIDDAY (noon) on the 9th.

  3. Stay at Arafat plain making dua to Allah until SUNSET. Better to standand while making dua.

  4. This stay in Arafat, noon till sunset, is called WUQUF AND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RITE of Hajj. PProphet Muhammad has said, "Hajj is Arafat".

  5. While in Arafat, you can listen to "Khutba" (sermon) at the Namira Mosque in Arafat & pray Zuhr and Asr in congregation. Fardh prayers are 2 raka'a Qasr but at their proper times.

  6. Leave for Muzdalifa AFTER sunset do NOT pray Maghrib.

  7. Recite Talbiya enroute to Muzdalifa.

  8. Pray Maghrib & Isha at Muzdalifa.

  9. Spend night at Muzdalifa praying. A very blessed night.

On 10th Dhul Hijjah. The Eid Day

  1. Pickup 70 clean corn-grain-sized pebbles for throwing at Jamratul Aqaba. You will need only 7 pebbles on the 10th but 63 afterwards.

  2. Leave Muzdalifa for Mina before sunrise but after Fajr prayers.

  3. After arriving in Mina DISCONTINUE Talbiya.

  4. Perform Ramy Jimar only at Jamratul Aqaba (use 7 pebbles). You will perform Ramy on other Jamarat the following three days.

  5. Perform Nahr (animal sacrifice).

  6. Men shave head completely. Ladies trim hair about finger's length.

  7. Go to Makka and perform Tawaf. This is called Tawaf ul-Ifada. The Second of the THREE MANDATORY Tawaf of Hajj.

  8. Then pray behind Muquamu Ibraheem and drink Zamzam.

  9. Then perform Saiy.

  10. Praying to Allah SWT is highly recommended.

  11. Return to Mina for final Mabeet.

On 11th -13th Dhul Hijjah.

  1. Stay nights, called Ayyamu-Tashreeq, in Mina for completing Mabeet.

  2. Throw 7 pebbles on each of 3 Jamarat successively each day (7x3 pebbles each day). Preferrably AFTER midday and Zuhr prayers. The three Jamarat are: Jamarat-al-Ula, Jamarat-al-Wusta and Jamarat-al-Aqaba.

  3. If you stay in Mina for only two days, you must leave Mina BEFORE sunset on the second day. If the sun should set before you are able to depart, REMAIN in Mina for the third night and throw pebbles again the next day.

  4. Hujjaj MUST leave Mina before sun set on the 13th.

Imperative

  1. It is imperative that you intend to leave Makka and return home, Tawaf ul-Wada' be perfomed. The third and final of the THREE MANDATORY Tawaf of Hajj.

 

Sunnah

  1. It is recommended that at least eight days be spent in Madina praying 40 obligatory prayers (5 times x 8 days) at Masjid An-Nabavi. Either before or after Hajj (preferred after Hajj). It is a sunnah.
