Conn. civil unions a landmark decision On page 12 of the newspaper is a tiny article announcing that Connecticut passed civil unions for gays (News, April 21). Is this really of so little import? This is the first time a Legislature and governor have given full marriage benefits to same-sex couples without a court order. If Georgia and several other states had not gone out of their way to deny such rights, perhaps this wouldn't be big news. And many gays, after the Massachusetts passage of marriage for all, may be less than enthusiastic about Connecticut civil unions. But many of us are thrilled by this new law and welcome the acceptance of civil unions. Having experienced both, I can say with conviction that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
